The age old tradition of the Welsh peasantry giving their loved ones a carved wooden spoon as a token of affection goes back many centuries.
The English term "Spooning" is almost certainly derived from this old Welsh custom.
No one today, however can say for certain how or when this came about. One thing widly believed is that certain designs represent specific meanings and that the spoon can often be read like a story.
Spoons are often given nowadays to celebrate births, anniveraries and christenings as well as engagements and weddings.
